(Environmental Specialist I)

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Consumer Protection, is seeking a Program Coordinator for the Office of Pesticide Services.  This position manages the Pesticide Applicator Testing and Training programs administered to ensure that pesticide applicators certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia have the necessary knowledge and skills to control pests in a safe and effective manner.  Duties include receiving and reviewing agendas for the recertification of commercial pesticide applicators; review of applicator certification manuals and development of associated certification exam databases; managing the  Registered Technician Proctoring program which includes implementing the planned phase-out of this program; and assisting the Certification, Licensing, Registration and Training supervisor in managing the applicator certification and pesticide business license programs, and associated regulation development. This position involves considerable interactions with Virginia's agricultural and pesticide industries, federal/state officials, special interest groups, and the general public to communicate program services and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:  Preferred candidate will possess a degree in agriculture, biology or other life and environmental sciences or a related field; however, an equivalent amount of relevant education, training and experience is acceptable. Candidates should have a working knowledge of the Pesticide Control Act, regulations pertaining to certification of pesticide applicators, pesticide business license regulations, and pesticide fees; experience interpreting and applying laws and regulations; and ability to independently plan, prioritize, organize and execute job duties.   Demonstrated knowledge of biological principles, pesticides, pests, and various pest control measures is desirable. Requires exceptional oral/written communication skills, including public speaking; excellent customer service skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.  Proficiency using Personal Computers including complex database systems is preferred. Hiring Salary: $35,000 - $46,000, commensurate with relevant experience. The Commonwealth of Virginia offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
